About these sessions
Our fist speaker is Professor Guy Newland, who is renowned across the Anglophone Buddhist world for his long service to the Dharma as a translator, writer, editor and teacher. In particular, he is owed a deep debt of gratitude for his work as part of the translation committee that made Lama Tsongkhapa’s revered Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path available in English. That being the case, there are few people more fitting to help us delve into this text.
Session 1: Approaching the Great Treatise. Thursday 18 Jan 2024.
In the first of Professor Newland’s talks, he will explain how students and readers can approach the Lam Rim Chen Mo, where the text sits within Lama Tsongkhapa’s opus, its importance within the Tibetan Buddhist canon, how one goes about using the text in personal practice, and what its distinguishing features are.
Session 2: Emptiness and Special Insight. Thursday 25 Jan 2024.
In his second session, Professor Newland will explore the Emptiness and Special Insight section of the text, specifically. He will be drawing on his book, Introduction to Emptiness which he wrote to help students digest this fundamental concept of Buddhism according to Lama Tsongkhapa’s tradition.
About Professor Guy Newland
Guy Newland is Professor of Religion at Central Michigan University, where he has taught since 1988. He is the author of four books on Tibetan Buddhism: The Two Truths, Appearance and Reality, Introduction to Emptiness, Compassion: A Tibetan Analysis. He is also the author of A Buddhist Grief Observed. As a member of the Cowherds, he co-authored Moonpaths: Ethics and Emptiness and Moonshadows: Conventional Truth in Buddhist Philosophy. He is the translator and editor of the Dalai Lama’s book From Here to Enlightenment; an editor of the three-volume translation Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment; the editor of Changing Minds: Contributions to the Study of Buddhism and Tibet in Honor of Jeffrey Hopkins; and the translator of Just What Are the Two Truths in the Middle Way Consequence School. He contributed to Tibetan Literature: Studies in Genre.
