|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, repeating until June 21, 2022

Free – £240

About the Course | Tuesdays, 08 February – 21 June, 19:00 – 20:30 (no class on 19 April and 3 May)
This course is for beginners who wish to be able to read Buddhist texts written in Classical Tibetan. The majority of the scriptures and prayers used at Jamyang Buddhist Centre are written down in Classical Tibetan.

The course is specifically aimed at developing reading skills. Some attention is given to pronunciation and reading texts out loud, but the course does not attempt to teach either speaking or understanding spoken Tibetan.

Although some familiarity with basic concepts of English grammar will be helpful, all the grammatical terms used will be explained in full, so no previous knowledge of grammar will be required.

The majority of the examples used are drawn from texts that are relevant to our tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.

Is this for me?
This course is suitable for complete beginners, and anyone who has an interest in the Tibetan language.

What can I expect?
An introductory exploration of classical Tibetan.

What will I need?
The course will use “Introduction to Classical Tibetan” revised edition, 2015, by Stephen Hodge, available in hardback or paperback from the usual outlets (paperback: £16.50 from Blackwells).

About the Teacher
The course will be taught by Rhonwen Sayer. Rhonwen is a long standing member of the Jamyang Community and a member of the FPMT Translation Team. Rhonwen translates Buddhist texts from Sanskrit and Tibetan into English. Over the years, she has received many precious teachings from different teachers and she has a Masters degree in Buddhist Studies from SOAS, University of London, specializing in Tantra.
