About the Class
These sessions are secular (non-religious) and have been created so that like minded people can meet, meditate and learn to meditate together. These are guided meditations using various tools including mindfulness techniques, visualisations and words we may contemplate on. In a Mindfulness Meditation practice, all who practice are invited to consider themselves as beginners. We are all therefore equal and the sessions are open to those who have never practiced before as much as experienced practitioners.
Is This For Me
If you have ever experienced unpleasant or uncomfortable emotions of any kind, from anger and frustration to disappointment and stress, these practices will be helpful. We have a friendly, nurturing and informal environment where you will be guided toward tools that will allow you to step outside of the thinking mind and experience the silence and space around your thoughts. We will learn how to develop a new relationship with our mind, witnessing our thoughts rather than identifying with them.
What can I expect
Practical and useful practices that you will implement into your daily lives. These practices are meant to be as practical as possible so as to enable you to live a more joyful, peaceful, happy and fulfilling life. The sessions are approximately an hour long and contain a blend of different guided meditations. You are always free to leave early so there is no obligation to stay the full hour.
About the Teacher
Vinod went through the same Vipassana (the Pali word for Mindfulness) training that a Thai monk would receive in 1994. He trained at the Wat Ram Poeng monastery in Chiang Mai, Thailand. He went on to work in the corporate world as a lawyer before joining various non-profit organisations dealing with a wide range of issues ranging from gender, sexual, migrant and refugee rights to animal welfare and harm reduction for drug users.
What will I need
Nothing other than your Self, and perhaps an intention or desire to have a break from the constant and often busy chatter within the mind. Switching off your phones or taking them “offline” as well as asking those around you to award you a little privacy during the practice can be helpful. If you are joining in from your workplace, perhaps finding a quiet space (a prayer room, quiet church or park) where you will be able to join in. Headphones may be helpful if you have little control over the people around you. You are advised to arrive on time because latecomers may not be admitted.
