Saka Dawa

About the Event
Saka Dawa marks the time of year when Buddhists remember the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha. The results of actions done on this day are considered to be multiplied by many hundreds of millions, so it’s an important day to focus on spiritual practice, virtue and accumulating merit. The fifteen days leading up to Saka Dawa are also considered to be especially powerful.

Last year, Geshe Namdak recited from the Kangyur, or the section of the Tibetan Buddhist canon that records the translated words of the Buddha, during those fifteen days. Jamyang students and community members also joined in from home by reciting sutras, and it was so inspiring we wanted to repeat the effort this year.

So we would like to invite you to complete as many recitations as you can from the texts in the list below between 12 and 26 May (Saka Dawa) from your homes. We will also gather online on 16 and 23 May so we have the opportunity to recite together with Geshe Namdak.

If you would like to participate, please choose which text(s) you want to recite and let us know how many recitations you have completed by emailing [email protected] by midnight on 26 May (Saka Dawa). Thank you!

This year Saka Dawa also marks an auspicious start to the first of two series of teachings on Nagarjuna by Geshe Namdak. He will lead us in additional prayers to mark the occasion. You can sign up here.
