Tenets: Weekend 1 (Introduction, Great Exposition School, Sutra School)
July 3 @ 10:00 am - July 4 @ 3:30 pm
About the Course
Jamyang Buddhist Centre London is currently midway through its current cycle of Basic Programme, an in-depth study programme on Buddhist philosophy and practice that has been designed by FPMT. Although registration for full enrolment has closed, we are opening up each subject to Observer students. Observers will be able to watch the teachings via a private YouTube link.
PLEASE NOTE: Recordings of these teachings will not be available, and attendance as an observer student does not count as credit towards course certification.
About this subject
Based on the idea that the Buddha taught different things to different people in line with their capacities, Tibetan scholars systemised the numerous trends in Indian Buddhist thought and taught the four schools of tenets as a means to approach the most profound philosophical teachings by way of gradually more accessible levels. Presentation of Tenets by Venerable Manjushri Chokyi Gyaltsen, the text that is the basis for study of this subject, gives a brief overview of the assertions on minds, objects, selflessness and the nature of attainment within each of the schools, culminating in the tenets of the most highly esteemed school, the Madhyamaka.
Is this for me?
As this course deals with advanced philosophical concepts, students will derive the greatest benefit if they have a basic understanding of Buddhist philosophy, for example: by having attended one of the introductory or foundational FPMT programmes, such as Discovering Buddhism.
What can I expect?
A lecture series exploring the philosophical positions on the nature of reality as presented by the various Buddhist schools of thought, delivered masterfully by Geshe Namdak.
Timings for each individual session will be confirmed soon.
- Saturday 3 July | 10:00 – 16:30
- Sunday 4 July | 10:00 – 15:30
Finish times are provisional. Please allow a degree of flexibility, as teachings may occasionally run over.

Because of his deep interest and background in science, and as a member of Sera Jey’s Education Department, he spoke on and organised various dialogues and conferences on contemporary science and ancient Buddhist contemplative wisdom of the mind and its philosophy.
