The Lives of the Ganden Lineage Masters with Professor Jan Willis

About this Event
When Professor Jan Willis published Enlightened Beings: Life Stories from the Ganden Oral Tradition in 1995, she created a doorway for Western Buddhists in the Gelug tradition to enter an essential but hitherto inaccessible dimension of their spiritual practice. The importance of the Buddha’s teachings being transmitted in an unbroken line of realised gurus and disciples cannot be overstated. To connect with these enlightened beings through their histories and life stories is of vital importance in developing faith and receiving inspiration.

Unfortunately, few of the traditional biographies (or namtar) of these lineage masters have been translated into English. A rare exception is this anthology by Professor Willis. In this talk, she will invite us into the world of these great beings whose heroic efforts on the spiritual path have preserved and sustained the Dharma that we benefit from today.

About the teacher
Jan Willis is Professor Emerita of Religion at Wesleyan University. A student of Lama Yeshe that grew up in Alabama during the era of segregation, she is the author of several books including Dreaming Me: Black, Baptist and Buddhist. Professor Willis was named one of six ‘spiritual innovators for the new millennium’ by TIME magazine, and one of Ebony magazine’s ‘Power 150’ most influential African Americans.
