Extinction Rebellion - Bodhisattva Activism
with Andy Wistreich
Registration Opens 10th September
- Talk FRI | 11 OCT | 19:00-20:30
- Interactive workshop SUN | 13 OCT | 10:00-12:00
Extinction Rebellion is just one year old. Its aims are to get the government to tell the truth about the impending climate disaster; to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025, and to create and be led by the decisions of a Citizen’s Assembly on climate and ecological justice. Its methods are totally non-violent, and its field of concern is all the species of this planet, recognising, in particular, the socio-politico-economic collapse being brought about by the environmental crisis. Everybody who is a Mahayana Buddhist has a moral obligation to care about all the beings of the planet, both now and in the future. These two agendas, external and internal have a powerful synergy.
Andy will lead two sessions, the first of which will be a meditation and talk followed by question and answer, situating the present climate crisis within the Buddhist worldview and cosmology. The second will be a participatory workshop of discussion, meditation, talks etc exploring the inner ethics required for a successful rebellion, namely non-violence and universal responsibility. These events can be attended as standalone or together.
/FACILITATOR: Andy Wistreich
Andy Wistreich was born in England in 1950 and spent most of his career in further education. During the eighties, he began to practise and later teach Buddhism, leading and undertaking retreats, and became a regular teacher at FPMT centres in the UK. He has recently co-ordinated the establishment of Land of Joy, the FPMT retreat centre in the UK, and a secular meditation class in Bristol. His commitment to spreading the Buddha’s teachings is firmly based in his concern for the planet and the beings who share it.
Before involving with Buddhism, Andy was a political activist, back in the 70s. Since 2006 he has become aware of the threat of climate catastrophe and considers it the duty of someone aspiring to live a bodhisattva’s life, to deeply care about and do whatever possible for the present and future generations who suffer the effects. The XR April 2019 action in London drew him finally into participation with XR in South Somerset where he lives.
