/ABOUT

Jamyang Buddhist Centre is delighted that Geshe Namdak will be teaching all thirteen modules of the FPMT Discovering Buddhism Course over the next three years. During September to November 2019, Geshe Namdak will teach the first four modules.

It will be possible to study each module individually or to study the entire four modules for this year and participate in the assessment process. Those students who complete all thirteen study modules over the three years and the finalizing retreat module while participating in the assessment process will be eligible for a completion certificate.

The first four modules are:

  1. Mind and Its Potential 21-22 SEPTEMBER SAT 10:00 - 15.30 and SUN 10:00 - 12:30
In this module you will explore the differentiation between mind and brain, mind as the creator of our experiences, and the implications of possessing a mind that has no beginning and no end. In addition, you will learn methods to transform destructive thoughts and attitudes and create a positive and joyous mind.

  2. How to Meditate 19 – 20 OCTOBER SAT 10:00 - 15.30 and SUN 10:00 - 12:30
Learn the definition and purpose of meditation, how to sit, how to set up a meditation session, different meditation techniques, and how to deal with obstacles to meditation.

  3. Presenting the Path 2-3 NOVEMBER SAT 10:00 - 15.30 and SUN 10:00 - 12:30
In this course you'll gain a clear idea of the path to enlightenment, especially its three main components: renunciation, bodhichitta, and the right view of emptiness. You will understand the progressive, step-like structure of the Lamrim, its origin in the teachings of Guru Shakyamuni Buddha, the three scopes, where you fit at your present stage of spiritual development, what you need to do next, and how you get from there to enlightenment.

  4. The Spiritual Teacher 23-24 NOVEMBER SAT 10:00 - 15.30 and SUN 10:00 - 12:30
In this module you will investigate the role of the teacher on the spiritual path: the need for a teacher, the qualities of a teacher, the qualities of a student, and how to relate to a teacher for greatest benefit in one’s spiritual life. You will consider the challenges we face when thinking of entering into a guru-disciple relationship and learn how to overcome these skillfully.

One module will be offered each weekend, The Saturday will consist of teachings given by Geshe Namdak. The Sunday morning will consist of group discussions, a Q&A session and a guided meditation. Those participating in the assessment process are advised to attend both days.

The assessment will be based on completing a short written questionnaire following each weekend. More details of this are to be found in the "How it works" section. Other ways of being assessed are available if you are not comfortable with a written assessment, such as a face-to-face interview via video conferencing or a live structured debate with other students which could be held on the Sunday afternoon following each session. Please contact us if you wish to pursue these other options.
