About the Course
Lola Odessey Waters will be leading an 11-week online course on the fundamentals of Tibetan language. The aim of the course is to give students a taste of the language, bringing them to the point of being able to read Tibetan prayers and texts. The course also aims to inspire students to begin a more serious study of Tibetan, so they can expand their knowledge and participate in the preservation of Tibetan culture.

Course Overview

  • The first class will be an introduction to the historical context of Tibetan language. Students will reflect on their motivation behind learning the language and clarify their intent.
  • The following three classes (Lessons 2,3 & 4) will focus on learning the alphabet, the vowels, and the prefixes. Students will learn how these different letters fit together and produce a final sound.
  • Lessons 5 and 6 will be revision sessions, mainly going over what students have learned so far through participative listening, pronunciation and group exercises.
  • Lessons 7, 8 & 9 will introduce the rest of the structure of the syllable (the first and second suffixes, head letters, and foot letters).
  • Lessons 10 & 11 will be the final revision sessions to fully assimilate how all the different letters function together in a syllable through a series of varied written, reading and listening exercises.

  • 30 minutes introducing theory & the grammar
  • 30 minutes group exercises applying the theory

Lola says: When I started learning Tibetan, I made one wish “May I learn Tibetan quickly, so that at least once in my life I can interpret for His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama.

Causes and conditions have led to her currently working as the French interpreter for HH Dalai Lama and Institute Vajra Yogini where she currently lives.

Lola’s aspiration: I hope that in the future, I can combine my understanding of the environment and Buddhist philosophy in order to develop study programs addressing climate change by understanding our inner world.
