SUMMARY:Freedom! From Disturbing Emotions
DESCRIPTION:About the event \nWhat would it mean to be truly free from anger\, attachment\, anxiety\, jealousy\, and the many other disturbing emotions that shape our lives? \nAccording to Buddhism\, these states are not fixed features of who we are. Rather\, they arise due to causes and conditions that can be understood\, worked with\, and ultimately transformed. The Buddhist tradition maintains that genuine freedom from mental suffering is possible – a state known as nirvana\, in which the disturbing emotions and their underlying causes have been completely uprooted. \nThis one-day retreat experience offers an opportunity to explore this radical and inspiring possibility. Drawing on the rich philosophical and contemplative traditions of Buddhism\, and supported by insights from modern psychology and cognitive science\, we will examine how disturbing emotions arise\, why they exert such power over us\, and how we can begin to loosen their hold. \nThrough teachings\, guided meditation\, and reflective inquiry\, participants will explore the nature of emotional habits\, the role of wisdom and compassion in transforming the mind\, and the practical methods that Buddhist practitioners have used for centuries to cultivate greater freedom\, balance\, and wellbeing. While the complete path to nirvana is profound and far-reaching\, this retreat provides a meaningful introduction to the inner work that makes such freedom possible. \nWhether you are new to meditation\, a long-time practitioner\, or simply curious about the Buddhist understanding of happiness and suffering\, this day retreat offers a welcoming and intellectually engaging space to investigate the mind and discover practical tools for living with greater clarity\, resilience\, and inner freedom. \n \n  \nAbout the Teacher \nAfter completing his university studies in Hydrology\, Geshe Tenzin Namdak worked as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. He began studying Buddhism at Maitreya Institute and was eventually ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama before completing the 20-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey monastic university in India\, as well as the traditional one-year Vajrayana study program at Gyumé Tantric College. He is now Resident Teacher at Jamyang London Buddhist Centre. \n  \nSchedule \nWe’ve tried to make the schedule for the day as spacious as possible whilst still packing a lot in. During the breaks we invite you to enjoy tea\, coffee and cake in our newly opened café! \n\n10:00 – 11:30: Session 1\n11:30 – 12:00: Break\n12:00 – 13:00: Session 2\n13:00 – 14:00: Break\n14:00 – 15:15: Session 3\n\n  \nRecordings \nRecordings of the sessions will be made available shortly after the event. \n  \nHow to join \nAttend in-person or join us online via Zoom. Register with the appropriate ticket option below. \n  \nDonation \nJamyang operates on a generosity model. Please select the donation option that is most suitable for your situation. \nJamyang is a non-profit charitable organisation that relies on the kindness of our donors\, including students and community members. The donations\, or Dana\, given when registering for events and teachings support the centre’s operations\, allowing us to deliver our activities. If you’re able to give a little more\, that’s wonderful; if a little less\, that’s fine too. These donations help with essentials like feeding residential volunteers\, housing our monastics\, and keeping our doors open. However\, we wish to emphasise that the Dharma is always offered freely and no-one is ever excluded because of their financial status\, please do not hesitate to request a reduced rate. \n\nFor Monastics \nWe would like to offer this teaching to ordained sangha members for free. If you are ordained sangha please register here. \n
