SUMMARY:Āryadeva’s Four Hundred Verses
DESCRIPTION:About this course \nOver the course of seven months\, we will undertake a close and contemplative study of one of the most profound yet practically oriented texts of the Madhyamaka tradition: Four Hundred Verses on the Middle Way (Catuḥśataka) by the great master Āryadeva. \nComposed as a complete path of training\, the Four Hundred Verses occupies a unique place within Mahayana Buddhism. While deeply rooted in Nāgārjuna’s vision of emptiness\, it is especially valued for its step-by-step guidance on how to transform the mind in preparation for realizing the ultimate truth. For this reason\, the text has long been cherished as both a philosophical treatise and a manual for yogic training. \nThe text is structured into sixteen chapters of twenty-five verses each. The first eight chapters focus on the collection of merit\, systematically dismantling unwholesome patterns of thought and behaviour that obstruct the path. Without this ethical and psychological groundwork\, Āryadeva makes clear\, realization of emptiness is impossible. The second eight chapters then turn to the collection of wisdom\, offering incisive reasoning that leads the practitioner toward a correct understanding of reality according to the Madhyamaka view. \nĀryadeva famously summarises this progression as follows: \nAt first\, turn away from non-virtue;\nIn the middle\, dispel misconceptions of self;\nFinally\, go beyond all philosophical views –\n One who understands this is wise indeed.\n (Four Hundred Verses\, VIII.15) \nThroughout the course\, Geshe Namdak will illuminate how the Four Hundred Verses functions as a bridge between ethical self-transformation and profound philosophical insight\, and how it complements and prepares the ground for later Madhyamaka classics such as Entering the Middle Way and Commentary on Bodhicitta. \nThis course offers a rare opportunity to engage deeply with a text that trains the mind not only to understand emptiness\, but to become fit to realize it. \n\n  \nAbout the Author\nĀryadeva (2nd century CE) is one of the most influential figures in the history of Mahayana Buddhism. Born in Sri Lanka\, he became a principal disciple of Ārya Nagarjuna\, and is revered as one of the founders of the Madhyamaka school. His works are studied extensively across the Indo-Tibetan\, Chinese\, and Zen traditions\, and he is traditionally listed among the seventeen great paṇḍitas of Nalanda. \n\n  \nAbout the Teacher\nGeshe Tenzin Namdak completed his university studies in Hydrology before working as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. He later began formal Buddhist studies at Maitreya Institute\, was ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama\, and went on to complete the rigorous twenty-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey Monastic University in India. He also completed the traditional one-year Vajrayana study programme at Gyumé Tantric College. \nGeshe Namdak is currently the Resident Teacher at Jamyang London Buddhist Centre. \n\n  \nSchedule\n\n\n\nMay – November 2026\nTuesdays | 18:30 – 20:00\nStarting Tuesday 5th May\n\n\n\n\n  \nIs this course for me?\nThis is an intermediate level course\, suitable for students who have a foundational understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and an interest in deepening their study and practice. Familiarity with Lam Rim teachings will be essential. \n\n  \nHow to Join\nEnrolment for this course is now open! SUMMARY:Compassionate Activism | with Venerable Robina
DESCRIPTION:March is International Women’s Month at Jamyang! An opportunity to spotlight some of the incredible female teachers in our rich tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Join Venerable Robina for this two-part online teaching all about how to practice Compassionate Activism\, and why doing so is especially relevant for our time. \nWhat is Compassionate Activism? \nThe point of Buddhist practice is finally to help others: compassion in action. But our actions – helping our next-door neighbour or helping stop the destruction of the planet – need to be grounded in wisdom. As the Dalai Lama says\, “Compassion is not enough; we need wisdom.” \nFirst we need to develop our own marvelous potential to live our lives with self-confidence\, contentment\, and courage. The key to success is to recognize our own suffering and how it’s caused by our own attachment and anger\, as well as other unhappy emotions. We become intimately familiar with our mind – the whole spectrum of our thoughts\, feelings\, and emotions – and learn to unravel and deconstruct them and\, finally\, change them. As Lama Zopa Rinpoche says\, “We can mold our mind into any shape we like.” \nNow we can go beyond our narrow sense of self and realize everyone else is in the same boat\, now we can begin to be of benefit to others. This brings optimism and confidence that every small action counts and we develop the courage to never give up. The great bodhisattvas are fierce in their determination to never give up on sentient beings. \nAbout the Teacher \nOrdained since the late 1970s\, Ven. Robina has worked full time since then for Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s FPMT. Over the years she has served as editorial director of Wisdom Publications\, editor of Mandala Magazine\, executive director of Liberation Prison Project\, and as a touring teacher of Buddhism. Her life and work with prisoners have been featured in the documentary films Chasing Buddha and Key to Freedom. \nSchedule \nSession 1: Friday 20th March\, 7pm – 8:30pm GMT\nSession 2: Friday 27th March\, 7pm – 8:30pm GMT \nHow to Join? \nThese teachings are offered entirely online. Please register below to receive the zoom link. \nDonation \nJamyang operates on a generosity model. Please select the donation option that is most suitable for your situation. \nJamyang is a non-profit charitable organisation that relies on the kindness of our donors\, including students and community members. SUMMARY:Nagarjuna's Commentary on Bodhicitta
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we embark upon a 3-month exploration of this inspiring text. Guided by Geshe Tenzin Namdak\, we will delve into Arya Nagarjuna’s poetic instructions that help guide the committed practitioner in developing Mahayana Buddhism’s most revered mind\, the mind of Bodhicitta. \n  \nNagarjuna’s Commentary on Bodhicitta\n\nCourse Details\n\nDates: September 9th – November 18th\, 2025\nSchedule: Tuesdays\, 6:30-8:30 PM (UK)\nFormat: In-person & Online\nLocation: Jamyang London Buddhist Centre\, Kennington\nTeacher: Geshe Tenzin Namdak\n\nRegister Now \n\n  \nAbout the Author\nArya Nagarjuna (2nd-3rd century) is widely regarded as the second Buddha and the trailblazer of the Madhyamika school of Buddhist philosophy. His coming was prophesied by Shakyamuni himself as the teacher who would appear when the karma of beings was ripe\, to expound and clarify the Buddha’s profound teaching on emptiness. \n  \nAbout the Text\nIt is rare to find a classical text that exhibits such a well-balanced and coherent structure as the Bodhicittavivarana. Nagarjuna’s Commentary on Bodhicitta explains the two bodhicittas (conventional and ultimate)\, the two truths and interdependence\, and delves into approaches for realizing emptiness. \n  \nAbout the Teacher\nAfter completing his university studies in Hydrology\, Geshe Namdak worked as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. He began studying Buddhism at Maitreya Institute and was eventually ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama before completing the 20-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey monastic university in India\, as well as the traditional one-year Vajrayana study program at Gyume Tantric College. SUMMARY:What Happens When We Die? Meditation on Death | Geshe Tenzin Namdak
DESCRIPTION:About this teaching\nThe Buddha taught that of all mindfulness meditations\, mindfulness of death is supreme. Even the moment of his own death was used as a teaching on the ephemerality of our existence. The Buddha’s last words exhorted his disciples to remember that all compounded phenomena are subject to decay\, to spur them on in their quest for liberation. \nContemplation on death can be a destabilising exercise\, but like many things that push us out of our comfort zone\, great value can often be found in it. When we truly internalise the notion of our own impermanence\, we are motivated to make the most of our lives\, cultivating a disinterest in the superficial and mundane pursuits that we normally spend our days being distracted by. And when we reflect deeply on the subjective experience of the dying process\, outlined in meticulous detail in the Buddhist scriptures\, we prepare ourselves for our own final hour. \nDrawing upon the traditional meditation structure of the three roots used to develop conviction in the inevitability of our death\, as well as the schema of the death dissolutions which delineates the stages of consciousness that occur at the time of death\, Geshe Tenzin Namdak will equip us with techniques to meditate on this profound topic. \nAbout Geshe Tenzin Namdak\nAfter completing his university studies in Hydrology\, Geshe Namdak worked as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. He began studying Buddhism at Maitreya Institute and was eventually ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama before completing the 20-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey monastic university in India\, as well as the traditional one-year Vajrayana study program at Gyume Tantric College. He is now Resident Teacher of Jamyang London Buddhist Centre. \nSchedule \n\n10:00 – 11:30\n12:00 – 13:00\n14:30 – 15:30\n16:00 – 17:00\n\nRecordings\nRecordings of the sessions will be made available to those who have registered shortly after the event. \nHow to join\nBook your ticket below. SUMMARY:The Faults of Meat | with Geoffrey Barstow
DESCRIPTION:Should all Buddhists be vegetarian? This is a question that has been debated amongst Buddhist practitioners for millennia\, and is still very much debated today. Nowadays\, with a large scale global meat industry and for the most part\, a somewhat removed relationship with the food we consume\, our practice of non-harm\, compassion and dependent origination seem all the more necessary\, and yet all the more complex. The question of Buddhist food ethics extends to all forms of consumption\, not limited to vegetarianism and seems at least as pertinent now as it was during the time of the Buddha. \nMost of us are unable to opt out of the global system of food production\, but we are able to choose how we live within that system. This is why Jamyang made the recent move to become a plant-based Dharma centre. It was a response to the situation we find ourselves in\, a response that is grounded in our practice of non-harm\, compassion and dependent origination. \nWe hope that this conversation will shed light on these issues and inspire us to be continually mindful of what and how we consume. \n \nJoin us for what promises to be a fascinating conversation about Buddhist food ethics\, with scholar and author Geoffrey Barstow as he talks about his latest publication\, ‘The Faults of Meat: Tibetan Buddhist Writings on Vegetarianism.’ \nAbout the speaker\nGeoffrey Barstow is an American religious historian and Buddhist scholar whose research focuses on Tibetan Buddhist ideas about animal ethics and vegetarianism. He is assistant professor of religious studies at Oregon State University and a student of Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche. \nRecordings\nA recording of the session will be made available to those who have registered shortly after the event. \nHow to join\nBook your ticket below to receive the Zoom link for this session. You can also join us at the centre to participant in this online conversation together from the gompa. Please donate what you can\, your donations help to cover our costs so that we may continue bringing talks like this to the community. The recommended donation for this session is £10.
