Whether you’re completely new to Buddhism\, already familiar with mindfulness or meditation\, or looking to deepen your understanding\, this course meets you where you are. \n\n\nWhat is Dhana and the Generosity model?\nDhana is a Sanskrit word meaning generosity or giving. In Buddhism\, it’s a foundational practice that cultivates an open heart and a sense of interconnectedness. The teachings of the Buddha are considered priceless\, and offering them on the basis of dana reflects this principle. \nAt Jamyang\, we follow a generosity-based model for our courses and events. This means we rely on your contributions to sustain the center and make these teachings accessible to everyone. \n\n\nHow long is the course?\nThe Discovering Buddhism course runs from May 5th 2025 to July 27th 2026. The course is 15 months in duration and is divided into 13 modules\, each focused around a specific topic. To help make the course more manageable we have built in a few gaps in the schedule; these breaks will be during August\, December\, and April. \n\n\nDo I have to sign up for every module?\n\nNo\, you don’t need to sign up for every module! While the Discovering Buddhism course is designed as a complete program\, with each module building on the last\, you’re welcome to join for the topics that interest you most. \n\nThat said\, committing to the full course provides a comprehensive understanding of the Buddhist path\, and you’ll benefit from the continuity of learning with the same group of students. If you’re unsure\, feel free to start with a single module and see how it resonates—there’s no obligation to continue beyond that. \n\n\nWhat type of Buddhism do you teach at Jamyang?\n\nAt Jamyang\, we teach Buddhism in the tradition of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism\, which emphasizes compassion\, wisdom\, and the path to enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. This approach is rooted in the teachings of the great Indian masters like Nagarjuna and Atisha\, passed down through Tibetan lineage masters such as Lama Tsongkhapa. \n\nWhile grounded in these ancient traditions\, our teachings are presented in a way that’s accessible and relevant to modern life. Whether you’re exploring meditation\, Buddhist philosophy\, or practical tools for living with more peace and purpose\, our programs are designed to meet you wherever you are on your spiritual journey. \nOur centre is affiliated with the global organisation ‘The Foundation for the preservation of the Mahayana Tradition’ (FPMT) founded by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Our Spiritual Director is His Holiness the Dalai Lama. \n\n\nAre there learning resources and support available?\n\n\nWe provide a range of resources to help you get the most out of the Discovering Buddhism course: \n\n\nWeekly Recordings: All classes are recorded\, so you can revisit teachings at your own pace or catch up if you miss a session.\nCourse Materials: You’ll receive comprehensive handouts\, readings\, and worksheets for each module to deepen your understanding.\nFacilitator and Teaching Assistant Support: Regular review sessions and assessments are led by experienced facilitators to help clarify and reinforce key concepts.\nDiscovering Buddhism WhatsApp Group: A dedicated space to connect with fellow students\, share resources\, and ask questions.\nRecommended Readings: Curated book and article lists to expand your study of each topic.\nOnline Resources: Access to additional materials and suggested meditations to support independent practice.\n\nThese resources are designed to ensure you feel supported throughout the course\, whether you’re joining in person or online. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re here to help\nContact\nIf you need any further information or assistance\, simply reach out to Freddie\, our Assistant Spiritual Program Coordinator\, and he’ll be happy to help. \ngateway@jamyang.co.uk \n\n\n\nThank you for your interest in Discovering Buddhism. The course is offered on a subscription basis\, and we invite you to offer a monthly donation for the duration of the course. Please select the level of donation that best suits your financial situation – you can amend your donations at any time on your account page. \nJamyang is a non-profit charitable organisation that relies on the kindness of our donors\, including students and community members. The donations\, or Dana\, given when registering for events and teachings support the Centre’s operations\, allowing us to deliver our activities. \nWe wish to emphasise that the Dharma is always offered freely and no-one is ever excluded because of their financial status.

SUMMARY:Prayers for World Peace
DESCRIPTION:In recognition and response to the 40+ armed conflicts that are currently ravaging many parts of the world\, and especially the escalation of violence in the Middle East\, we will be holding a special service of prayers and practices for World Peace. \nThis will be a collaborative event bringing together FPMT centres and study groups from across the UK. Geshe Tenzin Namdak will lead the prayers from the Jamyang London Gompa. Please join us online or in-person over zoom. Whether you are based in the UK or further afield\, all are welcome to attend this special prayer service. \n  \nMedicine Buddha Puja \nThe seven Medicine Buddhas vowed that their prayers would be actualized during these degenerate times when the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha are in decline. During this traditional practice we hold in our hearts the suffering of the world and pray for peace\, harmony and healing for all life on earth and beyond. \nGuru Rinpoche Prayers \nThese prayers were included among others compiled by Lama Zopa Rinpoche for the purpose of stopping war. Also to prevent famine\, disease\, and all the dangers of earth\, water\, fire\, and wind\, for all these dangers to be pacified immediately. To fill the whole world with perfect peace and happiness\, including enlightenment\, and to generate loving kindness\, compassion and bodhicitta in the hearts of all sentient beings. \nRecitation of the Heart Sutra \nLama Zopa Rinpoche explained that the only thing that can directly cut ignorance\, which is the root of suffering and samsara\, is the wisdom realizing emptiness. Reading and reciting the Heart Sutra is a powerful way to create the conditions for having a direct realization of emptiness. \n  \nHow to Join \nIf coming in person\, please feel free to just show up on the day. If joining us online\, please register below to receive the Zoom link.

SUMMARY:Prayer Service for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's 90th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Join us\, in person or online via Zoom\, for a session of prayer led by Geshe Tenzin Namdak in celebration and appreciation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. \nKyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche had this to say about His Holiness the Dalai Lama: \nNo other lama can benefit the world as much as His Holiness can… And even among the incarnations of the Dalai Lamas\, of whom there are now fourteen\, there hasn’t been anyone like this incarnation. The fourteenth Dalai Lama has benefitted the world the most\, and more and more in the West… His Holiness has taken responsibility for the preservation and spread of the entire teaching of Buddha… Because of His Holiness’ guidance\, all the monasteries that were destroyed in Tibet have been re-established in India and the monks have been able to continue their extensive studies… After all the trouble in Tibet\, the whole Dharma is still being preserved and being spread to others… This is totally by the kindness of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It has all come about because of his compassionate guidance. \n  \nIf coming in person you are welcome to arrive from 12:30pm when a sumptuous vegan lunch will be served for a suggested donation. \n  \nHow to Join \nIf joining us in person\, you are welcome to come along on the day. If joining us online\, please register below for the Zoom link

SUMMARY:Wisdom of Happiness: Film Festival for His Holiness the Dalai Lama's 90th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Overview \nAs His Holiness the Dalai Lama turns 90 this year\, Jamyang is honouring the occasion by hosting the London Premiere of Wisdom of Happiness. Join us next door at the Cinema Museum where we will gather to watch this intimate biopic for the first time. After the film we will be offering a tour of the Old Courthouse\, now the home of Jamyang London Buddhist Centre\, followed by tea and refreshments. \nSynopsis \nWISDOM OF HAPPINESS is a profound\, new cinematic exploration of the innermost world of the Dalai Lama\, perfectly attuned to our times. In an intimate heart-to-heart\, the world’s greatest ambassador of compassion invites everyone along for a journey to the source of happiness. \n\n\nAt the pinnacle of nine exceptionally challenging decades in the world spotlight that began at the age of four\, the Dalai Lama reflects on balancing millennia-old Tibetan Buddhist traditions with contemporary values of our globalized society that now struggles to overcome violence and war while standing on the brink of environmental collapse. The first Nobel Peace Laureate to be recognized for an early call to preserve our planet shows us that is possible to build a healthier\, happier world for all livings being and that the tools necessary to do so are\, in fact\, already in the palms of our hands. \nThanks to his expansive mind and disarming wit\, the Dalai Lama’s incredibly complex path to a healthy\, happy life is finely distilled and inspires us to see how simple it could be to build to a peaceful\, prosperous society for all to thrive. While happiness is born in each of us\, only the cultivation of unconditional compassion for one another will transform the world. \nIn what is likely to be the Dalai Lama’s last appearance in a film\, the extraordinary collaboration between Barbara Miller\, Philip Delaquis\, Manuel Bauer\, Oren Moverman and Richard Gere creates a remarkable and timely offering to viewers. The filmmakers weave captivating access with contemplative visuals and never-before-seen archival film to take viewers on a generous meditative climb- from the base of suffering to the peak of human intelligence where the view is simply transformational. \nWISDOM OF HAPPINESS is an unforgettable\, meditative experience for the 21st Century that not only unlocks a door to genuine\, lasting happiness but reveals that each and every one of Earth’s 8 billion beings holds their very own key to it in the palm of their hand. \n\nSchedule \n\n14:00-14:30 – Cinema Museum – Arriving and settling in\n14:30-16:05 – Introducing the film and screening of Wisdom of Happiness\n16:05-16:15 – Short break\n16:15-16:30 – Discussion and Q&A\n16:30-18:00 – Tour of the Old Courthouse\, with refreshments in the courtyard\n\n\nTickets \nIn the spirit of kindness that the Dalai Lama embodies\, tickets for this event are offered at a low cost – the ticket price covers the fee charged by the film’s distributor. SUMMARY:Saka Dawa Sutra Recitation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for in the lead up to and day of Saka Dawa as we recite Sutra during this auspicious merit multiplying period. \nRecitations will take place at 17:00 on 4 & 11 June. \nSaka Dawa is associated with three major events in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha – his birth\, his enlightenment on a full moon night\, and his passing into parinirvana. \nAs a merit multiplying day\, the karmic results of actions done on this day are multiplied 100 million times. This amazing result is taught in the vinaya text Treasure of Quotations and Logic. \nSo\, it’s a perfect opportunity to practice virtue and accumulate merit! Join us to do exactly that as we recite scriptures to mark the auspicious occasion\, including the Heart Sutra\, and Chanting the Names of Manjushri (as advised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to remove obstacles for the swift and unmistaken identification of the reincarnation of Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche). \nHow to join\nRegister below! Join online or in-person.
