SUMMARY:Calm Abiding and Special Insight
DESCRIPTION:About this course\nIn this course\, we will explore the profound and practical teachings on Calm Abiding (śamatha) and Special Insight (vipaśyanā) as presented in the Lam Rim tradition\, drawing primarily on the instructions of Je Tsongkhapa\, one of Tibet’s greatest scholar-yogis. \nCalm Abiding and Special Insight form the very heart of Buddhist meditation practice. Calm Abiding develops a stable\, clear\, and joyful mind capable of remaining effortlessly on its object\, while Special Insight employs that focused mind to penetrate the nature of reality through wisdom. According to the Mahayana tradition\, liberation and enlightenment can only arise through the union of these two. \nOur principal source text will be Lam Rim Chen Mo (The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment)\, Tsongkhapa’s magnum opus and an indispensable guide for practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism. In this monumental work\, Tsongkhapa brings together the full breadth of the Buddha’s teachings\, sutra and tantra\, method and wisdom\, into a single\, coherent path. \nThe sections on Calm Abiding and Special Insight are especially renowned for their clarity and precision. Tsongkhapa carefully outlines the stages of mental development\, the obstacles that arise in meditation\, and the antidotes needed to overcome them. The text gives essential instruction on how a mind trained in serenity can be harnessed to cultivate insight into emptiness\, in accordance with the Madhyamaka view. \nAs Lama Tsongkhapa himself writes: \n“When looking for the profound meaning\, you will clearly see reality if you have both the wisdom that unerringly discerns the meaning of reality and an unmoving attention that stays as you wish on the object of meditation… This is why you need both serenity and insight.”\n — Lam Rim Chen Mo\, Vol. III \nThroughout the course\, Geshe Namdak will explain how these classical instructions can be applied by contemporary practitioners\, clarifying how meditation on Calm Abiding and Special Insight integrates with ethical discipline\, bodhicitta\, and the broader Lam Rim path. This course\, therefore\, provides both a philosophical foundation and a practical roadmap for deepening one’s meditation practice. \nAbout the Author\nJe Tsongkhapa (1357 – 1419 CE) was one of the greatest figures in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. A peerless scholar\, meditator\, and tantric yogi\, his vast body of work revitalised and systematised the Buddhist teachings in Tibet\, leading to the formation of the Gelug school\, which Jamyang London Buddhist Centre follows today. \nTsongkhapa is especially revered for his emphasis on combining rigorous reasoning with lived meditative experience\, and for presenting the Buddha’s teachings with extraordinary clarity and precision. Because of the depth and transformative power of his contributions\, Tsongkhapa is widely regarded as a “Second Conqueror”\, after Shakyamuni. \nAbout the Teacher\nGeshe Tenzin Namdak completed his university studies in Hydrology before working as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. He later began formal Buddhist studies at Maitreya Institute\, was ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama\, and went on to complete the rigorous twenty-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey Monastic University in India. He also completed the traditional one-year Vajrayana study programme at Gyumé Tantric College. \nGeshe Namdak is currently the Resident Teacher at Jamyang London Buddhist Centre. \nSchedule\n\nMay 2026 – November 2027\nWednesdays | 18:30 – 20:00\nStarting Wednesday 6th May 2026\n\n  \nIs this course for me?\nThis is an intermediate to advanced level course\, suitable for students who have a strong foundational understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and an interest in deepening their study and practice. Familiarity with Lam Rim teachings will be essential.\n \nHow to Join\nEnrolment for this course is open! \nRegister here\n\n \nDonation\nJamyang is a non-profit charitable organisation that relies on the kindness of our donors\, including students and community members. The donations\, or Dana\, given when registering for events and teachings support the Centre’s operations\, allowing us to deliver our activities. If you’re able to give a little more\, that’s wonderful; if a little less\, that’s fine too. This course offers a fully supported hybrid learning experience\, with live teachings from Geshe Tenzin Namdak and Venerable Tenzin Gendun. \nCommunity will be central to your learning experience; Monthly review sessions and a dedicated WhatsApp group will foster a connection with others on the course through group discussion and meditation. \nThe FPMT Basic Program pathway starts with Discovering Buddhism. Then\, for those aspiring to go on to further study\, completion of Exploring Buddhism: Mind & View will make you eligible to enrol in the next FPMT Basic Program cohort in Spring 2027 — a unique\, in-depth journey into Buddhist philosophy and practice. \n\n\n\nAbout the course\nExploring Buddhism: Mind & View is an extract of the full Exploring Buddhism program. \nExploring Buddhism is a course co-developed by senior FPMT teachers including Geshe Namdak\, Geshe Legtsok and Venerable Joan Nicell. It was conceived as a bridge between the foundation-level Discovering Buddhism and the advanced-level FPMT Basic Program. \nThe course presents selected Buddhist topics providing a strong basis for study\, contemplation and meditation. The aim of Exploring Buddhism is to support those who are curious about Buddhist teachings gain a thorough understanding of them and put them into practice. \nJamyang will be running a condensed version of the course focusing on 2 of the 8 modules in the FPMT Exploring Buddhism program: Exploring the Mind\, and Exploring the View\, Tenets and the Middle Way. \nThis approach aims to prepare students for further study should they wish to enrol on the FPMT Basic Program commencing at Jamyang in May of 2027. Jamyang’s resident teacher Geshe Tenzin Namdak has advised that these two modules – combined with the topics studied in Discovering Buddhism – will provide a very good basis for the level of study and practice expected for the FPMT Basic Program. \n\n\n\nMeet the Teachers\nGet to know Geshe Namdak and Ven. Gendun\, your expert guides to Discovering Buddhism: \n\n\n \nGeshe Tenzin Namdak\nResident Teacher at Jamyang \nGeshe Tenzin Namdak brings a unique blend of academic rigour\, scientific expertise\, and deep spiritual practice to his teachings. After completing his university studies in Hydrology\, he worked as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. He began studying Buddhism at Maitreya Institute\, eventually ordaining as a monk under His Holiness the Dalai Lama. \nHe went on to complete the prestigious 20-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey Monastic University in India\, followed by the traditional one-year Vajrayana study program at Gyume Tantric College. \n\n\n \nVenerable Tenzin Gendun\nMonk at Nalanda Monastery \nBorn in Sri Lanka and growing up in England\, Ven. Tenzin Gendun studied at art school and completed a degree in illustration. After his tertiary studies\, he travelled to India and encountered Tibetan Buddhism in 1991 through the kindness of Lama Zopa Rinpoche and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He was ordained in 1992 and went on to work in FPMT centres in New Zealand. \nVen. Gendun moved to Nalanda Monastery in France in 2000 to deepen his studies. Since then\, he has completed the FPMT Basic Program and Masters Program. \n\n\n\n\nProgram Structure\nExploring Buddhism: Mind & View consists of 2 subjects taught over a period of 7 months. Working with root texts by Nagarjuna\, Chandrakirti\, Shantideva\, Dharmakirti\, and other great masters\, students develop the analytical and contemplative capacities essential for rigorous philosophical inquiry. The program represents a significant commitment to comprehensive Buddhist education and attracts practitioners ready to dedicate themselves to long-term study. \nThe study of these two topics – combined with the completion of the Discovering Buddhism course – prepares you exceptionally well for this next step.\nThrough systematic engagement with the foundational teachings\, you will: \n\nBuild the core knowledge base that underpins all subsequent Buddhist study\nDevelop contemplative and analytical skills essential for textual analysis\nGain clarity about whether long-term commitment to Buddhist education aligns with your aspirations\nConnect with a cohort of fellow students\, some of whom will continue into the FPMT Basic Program alongside you\n\nFor students not pursuing the FPMT Basic Program\, Exploring Buddhism: Mind & View remains a complete and rewarding course of study in itself. \nMany participants find it offers exactly the depth and structure they seek — a comprehensive grounding in Buddhist philosophy and practice that enriches their meditation and daily life for years to come. \n\n\n\nWhy Study Exploring Buddhism with Jamyang?\nAuthentic Lineage Teaching\nGeshe Tenzin Namdak brings decades of training in the Gelug monastic system and extensive teaching experience in the West. SUMMARY:Āryadeva’s Four Hundred Verses
DESCRIPTION:About this course \nOver the course of seven months\, we will undertake a close and contemplative study of one of the most profound yet practically oriented texts of the Madhyamaka tradition: Four Hundred Verses on the Middle Way (Catuḥśataka) by the great master Āryadeva. \nComposed as a complete path of training\, the Four Hundred Verses occupies a unique place within Mahayana Buddhism. While deeply rooted in Nāgārjuna’s vision of emptiness\, it is especially valued for its step-by-step guidance on how to transform the mind in preparation for realizing the ultimate truth. For this reason\, the text has long been cherished as both a philosophical treatise and a manual for yogic training. \nThe text is structured into sixteen chapters of twenty-five verses each. The first eight chapters focus on the collection of merit\, systematically dismantling unwholesome patterns of thought and behaviour that obstruct the path. Without this ethical and psychological groundwork\, Āryadeva makes clear\, realization of emptiness is impossible. The second eight chapters then turn to the collection of wisdom\, offering incisive reasoning that leads the practitioner toward a correct understanding of reality according to the Madhyamaka view. \nĀryadeva famously summarises this progression as follows: \nAt first\, turn away from non-virtue;\nIn the middle\, dispel misconceptions of self;\nFinally\, go beyond all philosophical views –\n One who understands this is wise indeed.\n (Four Hundred Verses\, VIII.15) \nThroughout the course\, Geshe Namdak will illuminate how the Four Hundred Verses functions as a bridge between ethical self-transformation and profound philosophical insight\, and how it complements and prepares the ground for later Madhyamaka classics such as Entering the Middle Way and Commentary on Bodhicitta. \nThis course offers a rare opportunity to engage deeply with a text that trains the mind not only to understand emptiness\, but to become fit to realize it. \n\n  \nAbout the Author\nĀryadeva (2nd century CE) is one of the most influential figures in the history of Mahayana Buddhism.
Born in Sri Lanka\, he became a principal disciple of Ārya Nagarjuna\, and is revered as one of the founders of the Madhyamaka school. His works are studied extensively across the Indo-Tibetan\, Chinese\, and Zen traditions\, and he is traditionally listed among the seventeen great paṇḍitas of Nalanda. \n\n  \nAbout the Teacher\nGeshe Tenzin Namdak completed his university studies in Hydrology before working as an environmental researcher in the Netherlands. \n\n  \nSchedule\n\n\n\nMay – November 2026\nTuesdays | 18:30 – 20:00\nStarting Tuesday 5th May\n\n\n\n\n  \nIs this course for me?\nThis is an intermediate level course\, suitable for students who have a foundational understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and an interest in deepening their study and practice. Familiarity with Lam Rim teachings will be essential. \n\n  \nHow to Join\nEnrolment for this course is open! \nRegister here\n \n\nDonation\nJamyang is a non-profit charitable organisation that relies on the kindness of our donors\, including students and community members. The donations\, or Dana\, given when registering for events and teachings support the Centre’s operations\, allowing us to deliver our activities.
Born in Sri Lanka\, he became a principal disciple of Ārya Nagarjuna\, and is revered as one of the founders of the Madhyamaka school.
Born in Sri Lanka\, he became a principal disciple of Ārya Nagarjuna\, and is revered as one of the founders of the Madhyamaka school.
