Whether you’re completely new to Buddhism\, already familiar with mindfulness or meditation\, or looking to deepen your understanding\, this course meets you where you are. \n\n\nWhat is Dhana and the Generosity model?\nDhana is a Sanskrit word meaning generosity or giving. In Buddhism\, it’s a foundational practice that cultivates an open heart and a sense of interconnectedness. The teachings of the Buddha are considered priceless\, and offering them on the basis of dana reflects this principle. \nAt Jamyang\, we follow a generosity-based model for our courses and events. This means we rely on your contributions to sustain the center and make these teachings accessible to everyone. \n\n\nHow long is the course?\nThe Discovering Buddhism course runs from May 5th 2025 to July 27th 2026. The course is 15 months in duration and is divided into 13 modules\, each focused around a specific topic. To help make the course more manageable we have built in a few gaps in the schedule; these breaks will be during August\, December\, and April. \n\n\nDo I have to sign up for every module?\n\nNo\, you don’t need to sign up for every module! While the Discovering Buddhism course is designed as a complete program\, with each module building on the last\, you’re welcome to join for the topics that interest you most. \n\nThat said\, committing to the full course provides a comprehensive understanding of the Buddhist path\, and you’ll benefit from the continuity of learning with the same group of students. If you’re unsure\, feel free to start with a single module and see how it resonates—there’s no obligation to continue beyond that. \n\n\nWhat type of Buddhism do you teach at Jamyang?\n\nAt Jamyang\, we teach Buddhism in the tradition of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism\, which emphasizes compassion\, wisdom\, and the path to enlightenment for the benefit of all beings. This approach is rooted in the teachings of the great Indian masters like Nagarjuna and Atisha\, passed down through Tibetan lineage masters such as Lama Tsongkhapa. \n\nWhile grounded in these ancient traditions\, our teachings are presented in a way that’s accessible and relevant to modern life. Whether you’re exploring meditation\, Buddhist philosophy\, or practical tools for living with more peace and purpose\, our programs are designed to meet you wherever you are on your spiritual journey. \nOur centre is affiliated with the global organisation ‘The Foundation for the preservation of the Mahayana Tradition’ (FPMT) founded by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. Our Spiritual Director is His Holiness the Dalai Lama. \n\n\nAre there learning resources and support available?\n\n\nWe provide a range of resources to help you get the most out of the Discovering Buddhism course: \n\n\nWeekly Recordings: All classes are recorded\, so you can revisit teachings at your own pace or catch up if you miss a session.\nCourse Materials: You’ll receive comprehensive handouts\, readings\, and worksheets for each module to deepen your understanding.\nFacilitator and Teaching Assistant Support: Regular review sessions and assessments are led by experienced facilitators to help clarify and reinforce key concepts.\nDiscovering Buddhism WhatsApp Group: A dedicated space to connect with fellow students\, share resources\, and ask questions.\nRecommended Readings: Curated book and article lists to expand your study of each topic.\nOnline Resources: Access to additional materials and suggested meditations to support independent practice.\n\nThese resources are designed to ensure you feel supported throughout the course\, whether you’re joining in person or online. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re here to help\nContact\nIf you need any further information or assistance\, simply reach out to Freddie\, our Assistant Spiritual Program Coordinator\, and he’ll be happy to help. \ngateway@jamyang.co.uk \n\n\n\nThank you for your interest in Discovering Buddhism. The course is offered on a subscription basis\, and we invite you to offer a monthly donation for the duration of the course. Please select the level of donation that best suits your financial situation – you can amend your donations at any time on your account page. \nJamyang is a non-profit charitable organisation that relies on the kindness of our donors\, including students and community members. The donations\, or Dana\, given when registering for events and teachings support the Centre’s operations\, allowing us to deliver our activities. \nWe wish to emphasise that the Dharma is always offered freely and no-one is ever excluded because of their financial status.

SUMMARY:The Faults of Meat | with Geoffrey Barstow
DESCRIPTION:Should all Buddhists be vegetarian? This is a question that has been debated amongst Buddhist practitioners for millennia\, and is still very much debated today. Nowadays\, with a large scale global meat industry and for the most part\, a somewhat removed relationship with the food we consume\, our practice of non-harm\, compassion and dependent origination seem all the more necessary\, and yet all the more complex. The question of Buddhist food ethics extends to all forms of consumption\, not limited to vegetarianism and seems at least as pertinent now as it was during the time of the Buddha. \nMost of us are unable to opt out of the global system of food production\, but we are able to choose how we live within that system. This is why Jamyang made the recent move to become a plant-based Dharma centre. It was a response to the situation we find ourselves in\, a response that is grounded in our practice of non-harm\, compassion and dependent origination. \nWe hope that this conversation will shed light on these issues and inspire us to be continually mindful of what and how we consume. \n \nJoin us for what promises to be a fascinating conversation about Buddhist food ethics\, with scholar and author Geoffrey Barstow as he talks about his latest publication\, ‘The Faults of Meat: Tibetan Buddhist Writings on Vegetarianism.’ \nAbout the speaker\nGeoffrey Barstow is an American religious historian and Buddhist scholar whose research focuses on Tibetan Buddhist ideas about animal ethics and vegetarianism. He is assistant professor of religious studies at Oregon State University and a student of Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche. \nRecordings\nA recording of the session will be made available to those who have registered shortly after the event. \nHow to join\nBook your ticket below to receive the Zoom link for this session. You can also join us at the centre to participant in this online conversation together from the gompa. Please donate what you can\, your donations help to cover our costs so that we may continue bringing talks like this to the community. The recommended donation for this session is £10.

SUMMARY:Online Community Workshop: Developing Our Statement of Commitment
DESCRIPTION:What are the principles to guide Jamyang’s actions through the planetary crisis we face?   \n \nJoin us for a vital community workshop as we develop our “statement of commitment\,” outlining our core principles for guiding us through these challenging times. This online session aims to gather valuable input from our community members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Community Workshop: Illuminating Jamyang’s Intent\nDate: September 10\nTime: 18:00-19:00\nLocation: Jamyang Buddhist Center\nFormat: Online Only\n\nWhat are the principles to guide Jamyang’s actions through the planetary crisis we face?\n\nOn September 8\, an in-person Community Workshop is help to gather community feedback as we develop our “statement of commitment” outlining our core principles for guiding us through these challenging times. This session is to be facilitated by Rob Hopkins and aims to gather valuable input from our community members.\n\nIf you’re unable to join the in-person session\, we’re organising this follow-up online Q&A session to share the draft core principles\, answer questions and gather feedback. This session will be more of a discussion than a workshop and thus will be shorter than the in-person version.\n\nContext:\nLast April\, leaders from the FPMT European region gathered at Jamyang Buddhist Center to discuss the role of a dharma center during this time of planetary crisis. Our community has been reflecting on this question for years\, resulting in concrete actions like our transition to a plant-based kitchen last November 2023.\nWe are now at a point where we wish to articulate a “statement of commitment” to highlight our progress and define the core principles guiding us through these challenging times. This statement will stretch us and hold us accountable as a community.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Q&A Session:  \nFor those unable to attend the in-person session on September 8th\, we are hosting this online Q&A session on September 10th at 18:00.  \nYour participation is crucial in shaping our shared future. We look forward to your input and involvement.  \n  \nOnline Facilitator: [tbc] \n  \nHosted by: Jamyang Buddhist Center  \n  \nWe hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Active Hope and Green Tara during a Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:This series is hosted by Paula Chichester and Margo van Greta\, and shared by Jamyang. Click on the “Book here” link below to contact the organisers. \nThe Work That Reconnects and Buddhist practice\nOnline with Paula Chichester and Margo van Greta\, from Monday 9 September 2024.\n  \nCrisis \nWe live in an age of ever-increasing human and environmental crises —Rising prices of electricity\, gas and food are very real and current threats. In other parts of the world\, disasters from fires\, hurricanes\, floods and rising sea levels endanger lives and livelihood.  Reports from scientists are more grim and serious than ever. The UN says we are past the point of no return. Are our political and economical systems really able to manage the complexities required to benefit all\, not just the rich? \n\nCan they adjust to what is required to save life on earth as we know it?\nHow do we stay present to these realities?\nHow do we deal with our anger\, despair and frustration?\nHow do we respond with resilience\, wisdom\, clarity and with our love?\nIs it possible for us to deploy more subtle agencies of change that can help the political/economic situation? We believe so.\n\nResources \nDesperate times can also bring out the best in us. It can connect us with our strength\, courage\, and our zest for life. It can bring cooperation and co-creation. \nLuckily we are also surrounded by support on many levels. We do not have to do this alone. Tried and tested methods have been developed over time to cultivate inner work which supports us in our lives. \nWe offer two complementary practices: \nThe Work That Reconnects\, is a set of practices developed by author\, Deep Ecologist and Buddhist practitioner Joanna Macy to build resilience for our challenging times. The Work that Reconnects helps people discover and experience their innate connections with each other and the self-healing powers of the web of life\, transforming despair and overwhelm into inspired\, collaborative action. We will move through the Spiral of Gratitude\, Honouring our Pain for the World\, Seeing with New Eyes\, and taking Next Steps. This is experiential and interactive. \n  \nGreen Tara meditation is a 2500 year old deity yoga that works with our body\, mind and spirit to uncover our  authentic sense of being\, our deeper self that isn’t  shackled by learned cognitive patterns that limit our capacity for love and empathy\, inner wisdom\, joy and strength.  \nBy first creating a personal environment of safety and connection\, we then use our imagination\, sound\, breath and awareness to reframe our experiences so we can transform fears\, delusions and issues of dignity and grace. Green Tara is especially known for manifesting change and creating positive causes and conditions in our outer world. So\, this is a very good practice to do if we wish to create a more sane world. \n  \n  \nFormat: \n\nSix weekly facilitated Online sessions of 1 ½ hour using Zoom.\nSix buddy group sessions with peers.\nYou receive integration practices to deepen at your own pace.\n\nDates: Monday September 9\, 16\, 23\, 30\, October 7\, 14\, 2024 \nTime:  7.30-9pm UK time \nFind the time in your time zone here \nSuggested Donation: £120 / £90 / £60 – sliding scale  \nThere are 3 prices\, in order to make this course available to all: \n\n£120: Generosity price: to financially support those without the means to participate. \n£90: Sustainable price: the regular price to sustain this course. \n£60: Subsidised price\, for those on low income and in need of financial assistance.\n\nNo one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please donate what you can. \nFacilitators: \nMargo van Greta \nMargo van Greta is deeply inspired by the work of Joanna Macy. Margo met her in Findhorn Ecovillage in Scotland where she has lived since 1991. She facilitates courses in Active Hope/The Work That Reconnects. She created Heartbeat Findhorn\, Inner Work for Outer Action\, facilitating the journey of spiritual deepening\, resilience building and the transformation of consciousness.  \nMargo has been a practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism since 1987\, created Buddhist Group Togme Sangpo\, teaches Discovering Buddhism and leads short retreats. \nPaula Chichester  \nPaula Chichester began her interest in deep ecology when she volunteered at the Ecology Center of San Francisco Bay area in 1969 at the age of 16. After a decade of environmental activism and scientific study\, she realised that our planetary ecological demise could not be solved solely by science or politics because the cause is rooted  in the tragedy of human greed\, fear and ignorance. She discovered that Buddhist body/mind practices could offer a remedy to this tragedy from the inside out. Inspired to heal inner pain for outer change\, Paula delved deeply into all sorts of meditation/body/psychology study and practice for 50 years now. Paula now teaches meditation all over the world and lives in the Shetland Islands of Scotland. \nBook here

SUMMARY:Community Workshop: Illuminating Jamyang’s Intent
DESCRIPTION:What are the principles to guide Jamyang’s actions through the planetary crisis we face?   \n \n  \nJoin us for a vital community workshop as we develop our “statement of commitment\,” outlining our core principles for guiding us through these challenging times. This session will be facilitated by Rob Hopkins and aims to gather valuable input from our community members.  \n  \nContext:   \nLast April\, leaders from the FPMT European region gathered at Jamyang Buddhist Center to discuss the role of a dharma center during this time of planetary crisis. Our community has been reflecting on this question for years\, resulting in concrete actions like our transition to a plant-based kitchen last November 2023.  \nWe are now at a point where we wish to articulate a “statement of commitment” to highlight our progress and define the core principles guiding us through these challenging times. This statement will stretch us and hold us accountable as a community.  \n  \nOnline Q&A Session:  \nFor those unable to attend in person\, we will host an online Q&A session on September 10th at 18:00.  \nYour participation is crucial in shaping our shared future. We look forward to your input and involvement.  \n  \nIn-person Facilitator: Rob Hopkins  \n \nHosted by: Jamyang Buddhist Center  \n  \nWe hope to see you there!
