SUMMARY:Compassionate Activism | with Venerable Robina
DESCRIPTION:March is International Women’s Month at Jamyang! An opportunity to spotlight some of the incredible female teachers in our rich tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Join Venerable Robina for this two-part online teaching all about how to practice Compassionate Activism\, and why doing so is especially relevant for our time. \nWhat is Compassionate Activism? \nThe point of Buddhist practice is finally to help others: compassion in action. But our actions – helping our next-door neighbour or helping stop the destruction of the planet – need to be grounded in wisdom. As the Dalai Lama says\, “Compassion is not enough; we need wisdom.” \nFirst we need to develop our own marvelous potential to live our lives with self-confidence\, contentment\, and courage. The key to success is to recognize our own suffering and how it’s caused by our own attachment and anger\, as well as other unhappy emotions. We become intimately familiar with our mind – the whole spectrum of our thoughts\, feelings\, and emotions – and learn to unravel and deconstruct them and\, finally\, change them. As Lama Zopa Rinpoche says\, “We can mold our mind into any shape we like.” \nNow we can go beyond our narrow sense of self and realize everyone else is in the same boat\, now we can begin to be of benefit to others. This brings optimism and confidence that every small action counts and we develop the courage to never give up. The great bodhisattvas are fierce in their determination to never give up on sentient beings. \nAbout the Teacher \nOrdained since the late 1970s\, Ven. Robina has worked full time since then for Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s FPMT. Over the years she has served as editorial director of Wisdom Publications\, editor of Mandala Magazine\, executive director of Liberation Prison Project\, and as a touring teacher of Buddhism. Her life and work with prisoners have been featured in the documentary films Chasing Buddha and Key to Freedom. \nSchedule \nSession 1: Friday 20th March\, 7pm – 8:30pm GMT\nSession 2: Friday 27th March\, 7pm – 8:30pm GMT \nHow to Join? \nThese teachings are offered entirely online. Please register below to receive the zoom link. \nDonation \nJamyang operates on a generosity model. Please select the donation option that is most suitable for your situation. \nJamyang is a non-profit charitable organisation that relies on the kindness of our donors\, including students and community members. SUMMARY:Sunday Dharma Talks
DESCRIPTION:Curious about Buddhism\, or looking to reconnect with its timeless wisdom in everyday life? Our Sunday Dharma Talks offer a welcoming and relaxed space to explore Buddhist teachings in a way that is both practical and relatable. \nThese informal talks are led by a rotating group of experienced Buddhist teachers and meditation instructors\, each bringing many years of lived practice to their teaching. On the third Sunday of each month\, they share insights drawn from the Buddhist tradition and from real life – speaking in a down-to-earth way that meets us exactly where we are. \nEach session includes time for reflection\, open discussion\, and plenty of opportunity to ask questions\, whether you’re completely new to Buddhism or have been practising for years. And of course\, there’s space to relax\, connect with others\, and enjoy a cuppa together after the talk. \nEveryone is welcome – no prior experience is needed. \n  \nThis month we’re honoured to be hosting Lama Zangmo who has kindly offered to speak about how to measure progress in meditation. \nHow do we know the practice is ‘working’? How do we know we are doing it correctly and we are not fooling ourselves? Lama Zangmo will look at some of the slogans from the Mind Training teachings which help us to evaluate our meditation practice. The slogans help us to look at our mind more clearly and use whatever arises\, whether pleasant or painful\, as part of the path. \nLama Gelongma Zangmo became a practising Buddhist when she arrived at Kagyu Samye Ling in 1977 and took refuge with His Holiness the 16th Karmapa\, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje. After spending some years in retreat\, in 1998 she was asked by Akong Tulku Rinpoche to set up and run the Kagyu Samye Dzong London Centre.\n\n\nFormat: Hybrid\nSuggested donation: £15\n\n\nHow to Join? \nSign up below or just show up on the day! \nDonation \nJamyang operates on a generosity model.
