SUMMARY:Medicine Buddha Puja
DESCRIPTION:About Medicine Buddha Puja \n\nIn Person Only\n\nPujas are rituals in which consecrated offerings – such as food\, water\, light and incense – are made to an enlightened being for the sake of creating conditions for progress on the spiritual path\, as well as removing obstacles. These offerings are made alongside prayer and chanting. \nThe seven Medicine Buddhas\, attainers of bliss\, strongly prayed for the temporal and ultimate happiness of yourself and all sentient beings. They vowed that their prayers would be actualized during these degenerate times when the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha are in decline. As the buddhas’ holy speech is irrevocable\, you can wholly trust in their power to quickly grant blessings to help all sentient beings in these degenerate times\,” Lama Zopa Rinpoche instructs  “If you pray to Guru Medicine Buddha\, you will quickly accomplish all that you wish. Just hearing the holy name of Guru Medicine Buddha and the sound of his mantra closes the door to rebirth in the suffering lower realms. It is written in the scriptures that you should not have a two-pointed mind (doubt) with regard to these benefits”. \nHow can I join?\nJust turn up!

SUMMARY:Buddha-Nature from the Geluk Perspective with Venerable Jampa Gyaltsen
DESCRIPTION:Venerable Jampa Gyaltsen is the head of the translation department at Sera Je Monastic University – the department set up under the guidance of our resident teacher Geshe Tenzin Namdak. Venerable Gyaltsen is currently in the UK as a visiting speaker at Oxford University. We are delighted that he has made time in his busy schedule to give a scholarly talk at Jamyang on Buddha-Nature. \nAbout the talk \nThe doctrine of Buddha-nature (tathāgatagarbha) is one of the most influential and widely discussed teachings in Mahāyāna Buddhism. While Buddha-nature is often presented as the basis for the attainment of Buddhahood\, its precise meaning and philosophical implications have been interpreted differently across Buddhist traditions. This presentation explores the Gelug understanding of Buddha-nature\, drawing upon both sūtra and tantra sources and their interpretation within the scholastic tradition of Tsongkhapa. \n  \nThe talk begins with a general introduction to the concept of Buddha-nature and its role in the Buddhist path as the foundation that makes enlightenment possible for all sentient beings. It then examines the Gelug identification of tathāgatagarbha(ཁམས་བདེ་གཤེགས་སྙིང་པོ།) with the naturally abiding Buddha-trait (རང་བཞྙིན་གནས་རྙིགས་)\, understood as the emptiness of the mind and the fundamental basis for spiritual transformation. \nParticular attention will be given to the Gelug reconciliation of two important scriptural traditions: the Abhisamayālaṅkāra\, which presents Buddha-nature primarily in terms of emptiness and spiritual potential\, and the Tathāgatagarbha Sūtras\, which often employ affirmative language suggestive of an inherent enlightened nature. The presentation will show how Gelug scholars interpret these teachings as complementary rather than contradictory\, maintaining consistency with the Prāsaṅgika Madhyamaka view of emptiness. Finally\, the talk explores the understanding of Buddha-nature in both Sūtra and Tantra\, highlighting their shared foundation while clarifying the distinctive emphases of each approach. Through this examination\, the presentation aims to demonstrate how the Gelug tradition integrates diverse scriptural sources into a coherent account of Buddha-nature that avoids both essentialism and nihilism\, while preserving the universal possibility of Buddhahood for all sentient beings. \nAbout the Speaker \nVenerable Jampa Gyaltsen is a scholar monk in the Geluk tradition with over twenty years of rigorous training in Buddhist philosophy (Sera Jey Monastic University\, Bylakuppe\, India). Former Director of the Sera Jey Translation Department\, he has led major Tibetan–English translation projects. He was also one of the participants in a Pāli–Sanskrit Exchange Programme at the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Thailand. A recipient of the ACLS Fellowship and Translation Grant in Buddhist Studies (2025)\, he has written on Tibetan monastic debate\, brain synchronisation\, and the neuroscience of analytical meditation. His scholarly focus encompasses the five major treatises of Buddhist philosophy — Logic and Epistemology (Pramāṇavārttika)\, Middle Way Philosophy (Madhyamaka)\, Perfection of Wisdom (Prajñāpāramitā)\, Phenomenology (Abhidharma)\, and Monastic Discipline (Vinaya) — alongside interdisciplinary research at the intersection of Buddhist philosophy\, cognitive science\, and psychology. \nHow to join?\n\nThis is a hybrid event with the option to join in-person or online over Zoom. The talk is offered freely\, but we ask that you register using the ticket options below. This helps us plan for the evening and ensure everyone has a seat.\n

SUMMARY:Science and Wisdom Live: AI and Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:Can Thinking About AI Help Us Understand Our Selves?\nA live dialogue on Buddhism\, AI and the nature of mind with Geshe Tenzin Namdak and Professor Murray Shanahan\, moderated by Chris Scammell \nSaturday 20 June 2026 | 6.30pm–8.00pm BST Jamyang Buddhist Centre\, London and online \n\nWhen you chat with an AI\, it can feel like you’re speaking with another being. But does that hold up? Does the system understand you? Does it think? Could it ever be conscious – and are those even the right questions to ask? \nBuddhist and Western philosophers have been working on the nature of mind and consciousness for thousands of years. This evening brings two of those traditions into direct conversation. \nGeshe Tenzin Namdak\, Jamyang’s resident teacher\, and Murray Shanahan\, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Imperial College London\, will sit down with Chris Scammell of the Buddhism & AI Initiative\, who moderates the dialogue. Together they will ask what these traditions have to offer as we try to understand this new technology — and whether thinking carefully about AI can change how we understand ourselves. \nThe conversation\nExpect a stimulating dialogue covering topics such as\, consciousness and its absence\, what “mind” means outside a body\, the Madhyamaka view of how things exist\, and Murray Shanahan’s recent argument that thinking through disembodied AI systems leads toward something resembling emptiness in the Buddhist sense. \nThere will be time for questions from the room and from online attendees. \nThe speakers\nGeshe Tenzin Namdak is Jamyang’s resident teacher. Originally trained as a hydrologist in the Netherlands\, he was ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and went on to become the first Westerner to complete the full twenty-year Geshe degree at Sera Jey Monastic University\, followed by the one-year Vajrayana programme at Gyume Tantric College. He is currently pursuing doctoral research at Oxford on the Eight Difficult Points of Prāsaṅgika in the Gelug tradition\, and is a regular voice at Science & Wisdom LIVE. \nProfessor Murray Shanahan is Emeritus Professor of Artificial Intelligence at Imperial College London and Principal Scientist at Google DeepMind. His work spans AI\, computational neuroscience and philosophy of mind\, with a long engagement with Buddhist thought. He is the author of Embodiment and the Inner Life (Oxford\, 2010) and The Technological Singularity (MIT\, 2015)\, and his recent paper Palatable Conceptions of Disembodied Being (2025) argues that AI can help loosen our dualistic intuitions about selfhood. He was scientific advisor to Alex Garland’s film Ex Machina. \nChris Scammell (moderator) is co-founder of the Buddhism & AI Initiative\, which brings Buddhist practitioners\, technologists and contemplative researchers into conversation on the future of AI. Previously Chief Operating Officer of the AI safety company Conjecture\, he holds a degree in Computer Science\, Anthropology and Philosophy from Colby College and studied with the Carleton-Antioch Buddhist Studies Programme in Bodh Gaya. He attended the 2025 Mind & Life Dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama on minds\, AI and ethics. \nDetails\n\nDate: Saturday 20 June 2026\nTime: 6.30pm–8.00pm BST\nFormat: Hybrid — join us in person in Kennington\, or online via livestream\nVenue: Jamyang Buddhist Centre\, 43 Renfrew Road\, Kennington\, London SE11 4NA\nOnline: Livestream link sent to ticket holders ahead of the event via email\nBooking: Tickets for this event are priced at £15
