“If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them.”
― His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Our Commitment
At Jamyang London, we believe caring for our environment is caring for each other. United in compassion –
whether guided by Buddhist principles or a shared concern for our planet – we recognise that the world is in
a state of emergency, and so together, we pledge to act like it’s an emergency.
Together, We Pledge to Act
In response to this crisis, our community has developed five principles that guide our actions and inspire
positive change. These principles bridge spiritual wisdom with practical action, offering a path forward for
everyone who shares our commitment to environmental stewardship.
1

Slow Down and Allow Space
Complex problems require time and reflection. How can we expect to successfully navigate the pitfalls of our inner and outer worlds if we are always distracted, busy, and burnt out?
Therefore, we pledge to respect and honour the boundaries that safeguard our inner resources. We commit to engaging mindfully with the world around us, protecting our attention from constant distraction. We seek to foster an environment of peace in our small corner of the world.
2

Look Deeply
When we look deeply it becomes apparent that the harm we see in the world stems from ignorance, attachment and aversion. Similarly, peace in the world stems from peace within oneself. We are called to be the change we wish to see in the world.
Therefore, we strive for self-inquiry, acknowledging the harm that our actions cause without looking away or passing the responsibility to others. We each commit to remedying that harm to the extent that we are capable.
3

Embrace Simplicity
We recognise that consumer culture and planned obsolescence can be very costly to the planet. We seek to challenge this norm by demonstrating an alternative; living simply with few desires. By rejoicing in simplicity, hardships give rise to contentment.
Therefore, we pledge to repair, reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible, even when it inconveniences us.
4

Act with Compassion
We are living through an era of profound moral, spiritual, social and environmental challenges. Suffering is all around us and compassionate action is needed.
We pledge to actively engage in acts of kindness and service to build unity and provide support to those in distress. Extending love and compassion to all beings, we strive to put the needs of others first. As consumers, we pledge to make ethical choices that minimise harm and promote the wellbeing of all living things.
5

Learn from Each Other
Seeing our interdependence with nature we seek to limit, as much as possible, the harm caused by ignorance and misinformation.
We strive for self-inquiry and to learn from each other; by listening deeply, by questioning current norms, and by recognising how all things are interconnected. We pledge to put effort into educating ourselves so that we can make better informed choices, to learn continuously, and to be generous in sharing what we have learned with others.
These principles guide our entire community as we protect our shared home for future generations.
