Looking Deeply: Compassionate Cooking for a sustainable planet.

At Jamyang Buddhist Centre, our commitment to compassion and non-harm extends beyond our teachings and into our daily practices, including the way we nourish ourselves and our community. Our kitchen is proudly vegan, serving only plant-based meals that reflect our dedication to minimising harm to all sentient beings. By choosing vegan offerings, we honour the practice of compassion in every meal we prepare and in every item we place on the altar, emphasising a diet free from animal suffering. This practice of non-harm also extends to our culture of procurement, with our House Lead team member, Cynthia, having carefully researched and crafted and our purchasing guidelines over the past year.

Our vegan kitchen is not only an expression of Buddhist values but also part of our broader commitment to sustainability. As the planet faces escalating environmental crises, the shift toward plant-based foods becomes increasingly essential. Animal agriculture is a leading contributor to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water pollution. By offering vegan meals, Jamyang takes a stand for a healthier planet, reducing our ecological footprint and promoting a mindful relationship with the Earth.

From nourishing meals for our community to symbolic altar offerings, our vegan practice at Jamyang encourages reflection on the impacts of our choices. Each plant-based dish is a small but powerful action toward a more compassionate, sustainable future, embodying our dedication to addressing the planetary crisis with a deep-rooted commitment to non-harm.

This week marks the 1 year anniversary of our plant-based kitchen at Jamyang. Please enjoy these video sessions with Cynthia, which share the inspiration, the heart and some of the challenges of this inspiring journey.
