Double-Up Dharma! Shantideva and His Guide to the Bodhisattva Path | Professor Jan Willis
February 29 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
About the series
Double-up Dharma! Incredible teachers. Two sessions each. Profound Buddhist wisdom.
About these sessions
Professor Jan Willis has a deep affinity with, and love for, the Indian master Shantideva’s seminal text through both her academic and spiritual exploration. She is therefore well placed to aid us in unravelling its near mythic status as the quintessential treatment of the bodhisattva path, and to help us understand Shantideva’s framework for achieving enlightenment: the Six Perfections.
From generosity and morality to meditation and wisdom, practicing the Six Perfections in accordance with the pithy and logical instructions found in Shantideva’s verses illuminates the reader-practitioner’s mind with a constellation of goodness, a light of virtue guiding us across the ocean of cyclic existence, to the far shore of liberation.
About Professor Jan Willis
Jan Willis is Professor Emerita of Religion at Wesleyan University. A student of Lama Yeshe that grew up in Alabama during the era of segregation, she is the author of several books including Dreaming Me: Black, Baptist and Buddhist. Professor Willis was named one of six ‘spiritual innovators for the new millennium’ by TIME magazine, and one of Ebony magazine’s ‘Power 150’ most influential African Americans.
